About Us

Welcome to The Audio Exchange, your premier destination for expert hi-fi audio and video sales and installation. With over 45 years of experience, we are proud to be one of the oldest and most reputable audio and video stores in Richmond, Virginia.

Our story began in 1978 when we started as a mid-high end stereo store located inside the Gramophone Record Store on Grace Street, near VCU. We were there during the golden age of vinyl records, and we have been passionate about high-quality audio and video ever since.

In the late 1980s, we were pioneers in introducing a combination of audio and video, which is now commonly referred to as "Surround Sound". As a Pioneer Elite dealer, we were ahead of the curve in embracing new technologies and providing our customers with the latest and greatest in audio and video.

As we entered the 1990s, we began to specialize in custom installation of audio and video in people's homes. We were among the first to offer this service, and we have remained at the forefront of this industry ever since. As a long-term member of Cedia, the Custom Electronics Design and Installation Association, we continue to provide our customers with the latest and most advanced audio and video solutions. Cedia is the international trade association representing the professional home technology industry. They provide training, certification, and standards development for professionals who design and install integrated home technology solutions. Being a member of Cedia helps us stay up-to-date on the latest industry trends and technologies, which allows us to offer our customers the most innovative and high-quality solutions available.

In the early 2000s, we shifted our focus to dedicated home theaters featuring front-mounted projectors, Cinemascope screens, and large 16:9 screens displaying digital formats, DVD, and subsequently, Blu-ray Disc. This was a time of great change in the audio as the shift from analog to digital formats began. This change allowed for higher quality video, with greater clarity, and sharper images. Digital technology also enabled the development of new audio and video equipment, such as high-definition projectors, advanced audio processors, and digital media players. At the Audio Exchange we remained at the forefront of this change, providing our customers with cutting-edge technology and top-of-the-line equipment.

Today, we remain committed to providing our customers with the highest quality audio and video equipment and installation services. While we continue to offer high-end audio and video installation services, our primary business has come full circle, providing true high-end but affordable 2-channel stereo. We specialize in turntables, phono cartridges, and high-quality vinyl record pressings, providing our customers with the ultimate listening experience.

At The Audio Exchange, we believe that listening to music and watching movies should be a fully immersive experience that engages all of your senses. We are dedicated to providing our customers with the best audio and video equipment and installation services available, and we look forward to continuing to serve the Richmond community for many years to come.
