The Empyrean headphones are solidly constructed with fine attention to detail. The aluminum frame is intricately etched to allow air to flow in and out freely and the flexible, carbon-fiber headband is paired with a leather strap to evenly distribute the weight of the headphones. The earpads are some of the thickest and softest that I've ever worn, delicately cradling my head and avoiding pressure points. Meze packs two sets of earpads — one leather, one Alcantara® — inside a heavy-duty, luggage-size carrying case, making for a stunning presentation.

The Empyreans feature a one-of-a-kind driver that delivers a powerful full-range sound. The diaphragm is covered with a flexible voice coil circuit and trapped in a magnetic field and moves when the circuit receives an audio signal. Meze and Rinaro developed a way to separate the voice coil circuit into two distinct parts, with a spiral coil for mids and highs and a snake-like coil for bass. This helps to minimize distortion and allows for a deep, authoritative low-end that is clean and bloat-free. The headphones also feature a special magnet array for greater efficiency, helping to send additional magnetic power back to the planar driver system and increase the overall efficiency of the Empyrean.

We were blown away by the sound quality of these headphones. The soundstage was spacious and breathable, with textured and realistic dynamics. The pinpoint imaging made every detail of the music come to life, while the bass response was deep and powerful without being overbearing. No matter what type of music we played, we were consistently impressed by the lifelike cohesiveness of the sound.
