Clear Dialogue for a Sonus Faber Lumina Home Theater
The Sonus Faber Lumina CI center channel speaker brings natural vocal reproduction and refined Italian design to a compact multichannel system. Designed as the dedicated center speaker for the Lumina collection, the Lumina Center I reproduces dialogue, lead vocals, and front-stage effects with the tonal character needed to blend convincingly with matching Lumina left and right speakers.
Its low-profile horizontal cabinet houses two 120mm natural-fiber midwoofers and a centrally positioned 29mm D.A.D. soft-dome tweeter. This symmetrical driver arrangement allows the Lumina CI to fit beneath a television or projection screen while providing the clarity and output required for small and medium-sized home theaters.

The Voice of the Home Theater
The center channel carries much of the dialogue, narration, and front-and-center action in a movie or television soundtrack. It also anchors sounds that move across the front of the room, helping the left, center, and right speakers behave as one continuous soundstage.
The Lumina CI is designed to reproduce voices with clarity and natural body. Rather than making dialogue sound thin or artificially emphasized, it gives speech enough weight and presence to remain understandable while preserving differences in tone, texture, and recording ambience.
This natural presentation is valuable not only for movies and television, but also for concert films, multichannel music, video games, and any program in which voices or lead instruments occupy the center of the mix.
Two 120mm Natural-Fiber Midwoofers
Two 120mm midwoofers flank the central tweeter. Their diaphragms combine cellulose pulp with other natural fibers, continuing Sonus Faber’s preference for paper-based driver materials.
Using two midwoofers gives the Lumina CI greater output and lower-midrange presence than a single compact driver could provide. This helps male and female voices retain realistic body while giving sound effects, music, and front-stage movement sufficient weight.
The opposing driver layout also keeps the cabinet relatively low, allowing the speaker to fit beneath many televisions and projection screens without requiring the height of a vertically oriented bookshelf speaker.
D.A.D. Soft-Dome Tweeter
High frequencies are reproduced by Sonus Faber’s 29mm D.A.D., or Damped Apex Dome, tweeter. Its hand-coated soft-silk diaphragm is lightly restrained at its apex to control unwanted dome movement and improve high-frequency behavior.
The tweeter is viscoelastically decoupled from the front baffle, helping isolate it from vibration created by the cabinet and midwoofers. This contributes to cleaner treble, clearer dialogue articulation, and a smoother transition between the center speaker and matching Lumina models.
The same basic tweeter technology is used throughout the Lumina collection, helping maintain consistent tonal character when effects or voices move from one speaker to another.
Optimized Two-Way Crossover
The Lumina CI uses a 2,000Hz crossover to divide the audio signal between the twin midwoofers and the D.A.D. tweeter. The crossover is designed to optimize both amplitude and phase response through the transition between drivers.
Proper integration is especially important in a center channel because dialogue contains substantial information through the upper midrange and lower treble. A well-integrated crossover helps voices remain cohesive rather than sounding as though different portions of speech are coming from separate drivers.
Front-Ported for Flexible Placement
The Lumina CI uses a front-facing reflex port integrated near the base of the cabinet. Unlike a rear-facing port, this design does not fire bass energy directly toward the wall behind the speaker.
This makes the Lumina Center I more practical for placement on a media console, beneath a television, or within an open-front equipment cabinet. The speaker can operate closer to a rear wall than many conventional rear-ported center channels.
Keep the area directly in front of the port unobstructed. Avoid placing the speaker behind a solid cabinet door or deep inside an enclosed compartment, as surrounding surfaces can still alter dialogue clarity and bass balance.
Placement for the Clearest Dialogue
Position the Lumina CI as close as practical to the center of the screen. Placing the speaker immediately beneath or above the display helps voices appear connected to the people speaking rather than coming from a separate location in the room.
The front of the cabinet should be approximately even with the front edge of the media console or shelf. Pushing the speaker far behind the shelf edge can create reflections that make dialogue sound less distinct.
Aim the tweeter toward seated ear height whenever possible. If the speaker must sit on a low console, use a suitable angled platform or isolation wedges to direct it toward the main listening area.
Keep the Lumina CI centered horizontally when possible. A horizontal center channel will generally provide its most consistent tonal balance to listeners seated near the center of the room.
Receiver Setup and Bass Management
Although the Lumina CI has a rated low-frequency response of 65Hz, it should normally be configured as a “Small” speaker when used with an AV receiver and powered subwoofer.
An 80Hz crossover is a sensible starting point for most systems. This sends the deepest bass to the subwoofer, allowing the Lumina CI and receiver to concentrate on dialogue, music, and front-stage effects.
A crossover between 90Hz and 100Hz may work better when the center speaker is placed inside furniture, when the receiver has limited power, or when higher playback levels are required. Final settings should be determined using the receiver’s room-correction system and careful listening.
Amplifier and Receiver Requirements
The Sonus Faber Lumina CI has a sensitivity rating of 87dB and a nominal impedance of 4 ohms. Sonus Faber recommends between 30 and 100 watts of clean, undistorted amplifier power.
Use an AV receiver or power amplifier that is rated to drive a 4-ohm speaker load. Wattage alone does not determine suitability; current capability, thermal design, and the number of channels being driven simultaneously also affect real-world performance.
For a modest room and ordinary listening levels, a quality receiver should provide sufficient output. Larger rooms, longer listening distances, and high-volume movie playback may benefit from an external multichannel power amplifier.
The rear panel provides two pairs of nickel-plated binding posts. The speaker can be connected using a conventional single speaker cable with the supplied jumpers installed, or optionally bi-wired or bi-amplified with compatible equipment.
Designed to Match the Lumina Collection
The Lumina CI is the natural center-channel partner for Lumina bookshelf and floorstanding speakers. Its shared tweeter technology, driver materials, and overall voicing help preserve tonal consistency across the front soundstage.
It can be paired with Lumina I or Lumina II bookshelf speakers in a compact theater, or used between Lumina III, Lumina V, and Lumina V Amator floorstanding speakers in a larger system.
When sound effects pan across the front of the room, closely matched speakers help preserve the apparent size, tone, and location of the effect. Matching is also important for concert films and multichannel music, where vocals and instruments may be distributed among all three front speakers.
Compact Size for Small and Medium-Sized Rooms
At approximately 20.6 inches wide, 6.6 inches tall, and 8.4 inches deep, the Lumina CI is relatively compact for a premium center channel. Its dimensions make it easier to fit beneath a display than larger three-way center speakers.
The Lumina CI is best suited to small and medium-sized rooms or systems where installation space is limited. Its twin midwoofers provide useful output, but extremely large rooms and very long seating distances may call for a larger center channel with greater driver area and dynamic capability.
Premium Wood and Leather Finishes
The Lumina CI uses a squared cabinet shape that places emphasis on its materials. The front baffle is constructed from multilayer wood, while the sides and top are covered in Sonus Faber’s signature black leather.
Available finishes include:
- Walnut veneer with maple inlays and black leather
- Wenge veneer with maple inlays and black leather
- Piano Black lacquer with black leather
Matching finishes allow the center speaker to coordinate visually with Lumina left and right speakers. Because Walnut and Wenge use natural wood veneer, grain patterns and color may vary slightly from one cabinet to another.
