The Art of Natural Sound

Italian craftsmanship, acoustic research, and expressive musicality come together in a loudspeaker designed to live as beautifully as it performs.

Room-Filling Sonus Faber Sound in a Compact Bookshelf Speaker

The Sonus Faber Lumina II bookshelf speakers deliver a fuller, more substantial presentation than their compact dimensions might suggest. As the larger of the two original Lumina bookshelf models, the Lumina II combines a 150mm natural-fiber midwoofer with Sonus Faber’s 29mm D.A.D. soft-dome tweeter to produce clear vocals, spacious imaging, and greater bass authority than the smaller Lumina I.

Measuring only 12 inches tall, the Lumina II remains easy to accommodate in a living room, office, apartment, or dedicated listening space. Its front-firing reflex port also makes it less sensitive to placement near a rear wall than many conventional rear-ported bookshelf speakers.

  • Two-way passive bookshelf speaker system
  • 29mm D.A.D. hand-coated soft-silk dome tweeter
  • 150mm paper and natural-fiber midwoofer
  • Front-firing reflex port for flexible placement
  • Premium multilayer wood front baffle
  • Black leather covering on the cabinet sides and top
  • Bi-wire and bi-amp capable binding posts
  • Made in Italy
  • Priced and packaged as a stereo pair

Open, Natural, and Expressive Sound

The Lumina II is designed for listeners who value natural tonal character, vocal clarity, and a convincing sense of space. Its midrange presentation gives singers and acoustic instruments a clear, immediate presence without making the overall balance sound excessively forward.

Sonus Faber’s D.A.D. tweeter adds detail and openness across the upper frequencies, helping the Lumina II reveal subtle ambience, instrumental texture, and spatial information within a recording. The result is a lively and articulate presentation that remains well suited to extended listening at normal and moderately high playback levels.

When properly positioned, the speakers can create a broad, organized soundstage with stable center imaging. Vocals remain focused between the speakers while instruments are given enough separation to occupy distinct positions within the performance.

More Bass and Scale Than the Lumina I

The Lumina II uses a larger cabinet and a 150mm midwoofer, compared with the 120mm driver found in the Lumina I. This gives the Lumina II greater bass extension, increased weight through the lower midrange, and a larger overall sense of scale.

Its rated frequency response extends down to 55Hz, allowing it to reproduce bass guitar, drums, piano, and orchestral material with convincing body in a small or medium-sized room. The bass remains controlled and articulate rather than deliberately exaggerated.

A subwoofer is not essential for most music listening, but one can still be beneficial for listeners who want the deepest electronic bass, full-scale pipe organ, or the low-frequency effects found in movie soundtracks. The Lumina II can form the foundation of an excellent compact 2.1-channel system when paired with a properly integrated subwoofer.

Front-Ported for Flexible Placement

Many bookshelf speakers use a rear-facing bass port that requires additional space between the cabinet and the wall. The Sonus Faber Lumina II instead places its reflex port along the lower front of the enclosure.

This arrangement makes the speaker more accommodating when positioned on a bookshelf, media console, credenza, or closer to a rear wall. It does not eliminate the effects of room placement, but it gives the Lumina II more flexibility than many similarly sized rear-ported designs.

For the most precise stereo imaging, place the speakers on rigid stands with the tweeters near seated ear height. Begin with the speakers forming roughly an equal-sided triangle with the listening position. A slight inward angle can help sharpen center imaging, although the final amount of toe-in should be adjusted for the room and personal preference.

Premium Italian Materials and Craftsmanship

The Lumina II carries recognizable Sonus Faber materials into a simpler, squared cabinet design. The front baffle is constructed from multilayer wood and finished in real wood veneer or high-gloss Piano Black. The cabinet sides and top are covered in Sonus Faber’s signature black leather.

Walnut and Wenge finishes include contrasting maple inlays across the front baffle, emphasizing the layered wood construction. Piano Black offers a more contemporary appearance without the contrasting inlays.

Available finishes include:

  • Walnut with maple inlays and black leather
  • Wenge with maple inlays and black leather
  • Piano Black with black leather

Because the cabinet uses real wood veneer and leather, minor variations in grain and appearance are normal. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, excessive heat, or high humidity to help preserve the finish.

D.A.D. Soft-Dome Tweeter

High frequencies are reproduced by Sonus Faber’s 29mm D.A.D., or Damped Apex Dome, tweeter. Its hand-coated soft-silk diaphragm is supported at the apex to control unwanted movement and improve high-frequency behavior.

The tweeter is also viscoelastically decoupled from the front baffle to help reduce the transmission of cabinet vibration. This driver technology is related to the tweeter design used in the higher-level Sonetto collection.

150mm Natural-Fiber Midwoofer

The Lumina II’s 150mm midwoofer was developed specifically for the Lumina collection. Its diaphragm combines cellulose pulp with other natural fibers, continuing Sonus Faber’s preference for naturally derived driver materials.

The larger driver allows the Lumina II to move more air than the Lumina I, contributing to its stronger bass response, greater dynamic presence, and more convincing performance in medium-sized rooms.

Amplifier Requirements and System Matching

The Lumina II has a nominal impedance of 4 ohms and a sensitivity rating of 86dB. Sonus Faber recommends an amplifier capable of producing between 30 and 150 watts per channel without clipping.

Although the speakers do not require an unusually powerful amplifier, they should be paired with an integrated amplifier, receiver, or power amplifier that is comfortable driving a 4-ohm load. A quality amplifier producing approximately 50 watts per channel or more into 4 ohms is a sensible starting point for most rooms.

The Lumina II is revealing enough to benefit from better source components and amplification, but it does not require an extremely elaborate system to perform well. It can be matched with a wide variety of solid-state and tube electronics, provided the amplifier offers suitable power and current delivery.

Two pairs of nickel-plated binding posts are provided on each speaker. The supplied jumpers allow normal single-wire connection, while removing the jumpers permits optional bi-wiring or bi-amplification.

Stereo and Home Theater Applications

In a two-channel system, the Lumina II is well suited to small and medium-sized rooms where a floorstanding speaker may be unnecessary or difficult to accommodate. It works particularly well for vinyl playback, high-resolution streaming, compact integrated-amplifier systems, and dedicated music rooms with limited floor space.

The Lumina II can also be used as a front left and right speaker in a compact home theater or as a high-quality surround speaker in a larger Lumina system. Pairing it with the matching Lumina center channel helps maintain consistent tonal character across dialogue, music, and surround effects.

Lumina I or Lumina II?

The Lumina I is the better choice when cabinet size and placement flexibility are the highest priorities. Its smaller enclosure is easier to incorporate into a desktop, bedroom, office, or very compact listening area.

Choose the Lumina II when you have room for a slightly larger cabinet and want deeper bass, greater dynamic capability, and a more substantial presentation. The Lumina II is generally the stronger choice for a primary stereo system in a small or medium-sized room.

Lumina II or Lumina II Amator?

This page is for the original Sonus Faber Lumina II, not the newer Lumina II Amator. The Amator is a separate model with revised drivers, crossover components, and exterior finishes.

The original Lumina II remains an appealing choice for listeners who want the larger Lumina bookshelf format, classic Walnut, Wenge, or Piano Black finishes, and a more accessible entry point into the Sonus Faber range.

Is the Sonus Faber Lumina II Right for You?

The Lumina II is especially well suited for listeners who want:

  • A premium bookshelf speaker for a small or medium-sized room
  • More bass and scale than the compact Lumina I
  • Natural vocals, clear midrange, and spacious stereo imaging
  • A front-ported speaker that can be positioned closer to a wall
  • Real wood, leather, and Italian craftsmanship
  • A compact speaker for both music and home theater
  • The option to add a subwoofer for deeper low-frequency extension

Listeners with a particularly large room, very long listening distance, or a preference for sustained high-volume playback may be better served by a larger floorstanding model such as the Lumina III or Lumina V.
