The Sonus Faber Maxima Amator is a high-end, two-way loudspeaker that is designed to deliver exceptional sound quality and a visually striking appearance. It is part of the company's Heritage Collection, which reinterprets the ingredients of Sonus Faber's early speakers, including solid wood, leather, and brass, using modern manufacturing techniques.
The Maxima Amator boasts a number of features that contribute to its impressive sound quality. Its tweeter is a 28mm "Arrow Point" DAD (Damped Apex Dome) silk dome design, which has been used by Sonus Faber since 2003. This high-quality tweeter is designed to produce smooth, natural sound with excellent detail and resolution.
The speaker's mid/woofer is a 180mm (6.5") driver with a diaphragm made from a blend of traditional cellulose pulp, kapok, kenaf, and other natural fibers. This diaphragm is mounted on a die-cast aluminum basket of Sonus Faber's own design, which helps to improve the driver's performance and durability.
The Maxima Amator's enclosure is divided into three internal compartments, which are designed to minimize cabinet resonances and increase the stability of the speaker. The largest compartment is an acoustic volume, which is treated with a damping material that is typically used for room-acoustic applications. This compartment houses both the tweeter and mid/woofer. A second, smaller compartment beneath the acoustic volume is filled with a different damping material that helps to minimize cabinet resonances and lower the center of gravity. A third small compartment at the bottom of the cabinet provides a vibration-free environment for the crossover electronics.
In addition to its advanced engineering and construction, the Maxima Amator is a visually stunning speaker. It is made with inch-thick walnut wood, soft leather covering the front baffle and rear panel, and a piece of black marble with brown and tan veining for the integral plinth. The cabinet appears to bulge slightly outward, adding to the speaker's sumptuous appearance. Small grilles to cover the two drivers are provided, but the speaker looks better without them.
All in all, the Sonus Faber Maxima Amator is a masterpiece of industrial design and engineering, with a unique and visually striking appearance and exceptional sound quality. It is a high-end speaker that is sure to impress audiophiles and design enthusiasts alike.
