Suprema-Derived Camelia Midrange

The Sonetto V G2 uses a 6.5-inch Camelia midrange derived from technology developed for Sonus Faber’s flagship Suprema system.

Instead of a conventional circular diaphragm and surround, the Camelia driver uses an irregular five-petal shape inspired by the camellia flower. The asymmetrical geometry is designed to disrupt the resonant behavior commonly associated with symmetrical circular driver suspensions.

Its paper-based diaphragm is intentionally left unpainted, avoiding the additional mass and damping changes that a decorative coating could introduce. An aluminum phase plug at the center of the driver helps improve frequency response, heat dissipation, and off-axis consistency.

The result is a midrange designed to reproduce voices and instruments with clarity, natural texture, and consistent dispersion throughout the listening area.

Sealed Cork Midrange Chamber

The Camelia midrange operates inside a specially shaped sealed chamber made from cork. This construction is another concept inherited from the Suprema project.

Cork combines natural damping with a complex internal structure that helps control reflections and standing waves behind the driver. The chamber avoids simple parallel surfaces, allowing sound energy behind the midrange to dissipate more gradually.

Separating the midrange from the woofer section also prevents the pressure generated by the two bass drivers from interfering with the frequencies most responsible for voices and instrumental tone.

This contributes to clearer midrange reproduction, more stable imaging, and better separation during complex musical passages.

D.A.D. Arrow Point Tweeter

High frequencies are reproduced by a 1.1-inch D.A.D., or Damped Apex Dome, Arrow Point tweeter. Its soft-silk diaphragm is locally restrained at the apex to control unwanted motion and extend its usable frequency range.

A copper element within the tweeter motor helps control inductance and distortion, supporting high-frequency response beyond the conventional audible range.

Although frequencies above human hearing are not perceived directly, smooth extended behavior can improve the tweeter’s performance lower in its operating range. The Sonetto V G2 is rated to 40,000Hz.

The tweeter is designed to preserve fine detail, recording ambience, and harmonic texture without separating the treble from the rest of the musical presentation.

Dual 6.5-Inch Woofers

Two 6.5-inch woofers reproduce frequencies below the 280Hz crossover point. Their paper-pulp sandwich diaphragms are designed to combine low moving mass, rigidity, and natural internal damping.

Each woofer uses an organic die-cast basket and an aluminum demodulation ring within the motor structure. The demodulation rings help stabilize the magnetic system as the cones move, reducing distortion and improving consistency across the drivers’ operating range.

The woofer surrounds use a distinctive flower pattern rather than a conventional uniform circle. The asymmetrical geometry is designed to reduce symmetrical resonances and improve linear movement at higher output levels.

With a rated extension to 35Hz, the Sonetto V G2 can reproduce most music with convincing low-frequency weight without automatically requiring a subwoofer.

Deep Bass Without an Oversized Cabinet

The Sonetto V G2 provides substantially deeper and more powerful bass than the smaller Sonetto III G2. Its dual woofers allow it to move more air while its larger cabinet supports lower bass extension.

Kick drums, bass guitar, piano, synthesizers, and orchestral percussion are presented with physical presence and useful low-frequency detail. The speaker is designed to distinguish individual bass notes rather than producing a generalized sense of low-frequency weight.

For most stereo music systems, the Sonetto V G2 can operate successfully without a subwoofer. Adding one may still be worthwhile for pipe organ, electronic sub-bass, very large rooms, or home theater soundtracks containing dedicated low-frequency effects.

Three-Way Crossover Architecture

The Sonetto V G2 uses crossover points at 280Hz and 2,500Hz. The two woofers handle the lowest frequencies, the Camelia driver reproduces the midrange, and the D.A.D. tweeter covers the upper frequencies.

Giving the midrange its own driver allows the woofers to concentrate on bass reproduction without being asked to reproduce voices and other critical midband information. It also allows the tweeter to operate above the range where a larger cone would begin to narrow its dispersion.

The crossover network is designed to coordinate the amplitude and phase behavior of all four drivers, allowing them to behave as a unified acoustic system rather than separate sound sources.

Down-Firing Reflex Port and Concrete Base

The bass-reflex port vents downward toward the Sonetto V G2’s concrete base. The fixed distance between the port and base creates a consistent loading surface and prevents the port from firing directly toward the wall behind the speaker.

This arrangement offers more placement flexibility than a conventional rear-facing port, although the speaker still benefits from adequate space around the cabinet.

The concrete base adds mass beneath the tall enclosure, lowering its center of gravity and helping resist movement caused by the woofers. It also maintains the correct clearance beneath the down-firing port on different floor surfaces.

Spikes and floor-friendly feet can be used according to the installation. Suitable protective discs should be placed beneath spikes when the speakers are installed on hardwood, tile, or another delicate surface.

Lute-Shaped Cabinet

The Sonetto V G2 uses a curved lute-shaped cabinet rather than a conventional rectangular box. Reducing broad parallel surfaces helps limit internal standing waves and increases the enclosure’s structural rigidity.

The cabinet tapers toward the rear, giving the speaker a visually lighter profile than its internal volume might suggest. The narrow front baffle also reduces the amount of surrounding surface near the drivers.

Wood veneer is applied at a 45-degree angle, a visual technique also used on higher-level Sonus Faber models. Leather surrounds the tweeter and midrange assembly, while the concrete base provides a contrasting structural element.

Placement and Room Size

The Sonetto V G2 is best suited to medium and larger listening rooms, although careful placement can also make it work in a moderately sized space.

Begin with approximately 24 to 36 inches between the rear of the cabinet and the wall. Moving the speakers farther into the room will generally improve soundstage depth and bass definition. Moving them closer to the wall will increase perceived bass output.

Position the speakers and main listening seat in a roughly equal-sided triangle. Begin with a modest amount of toe-in so the speaker axes cross slightly behind the listener.

Increase toe-in when center imaging lacks focus. Reduce toe-in when the soundstage feels narrow or the upper frequencies are too prominent.

Because the Sonetto V G2 is capable of substantial bass output, avoid placing it directly into a room corner unless additional low-frequency reinforcement is specifically desired.

Amplifier Requirements and Matching

The Sonus Faber Sonetto V G2 has a rated sensitivity of 89dB and a nominal impedance of 4 ohms. Sonus Faber recommends between 50 and 320 watts per channel of clean, undistorted amplifier power.

The sensitivity figure means extreme wattage is not required for ordinary listening, but the speaker’s impedance and phase behavior make amplifier current delivery important. Choose an integrated amplifier, receiver, or power amplifier that is explicitly comfortable driving a 4-ohm load.

For most medium-sized rooms, a high-quality amplifier producing approximately 100 to 200 watts per channel into 4 ohms is a sensible starting range. Smaller rooms and moderate playback levels may require less power, while larger rooms and sustained high-volume listening may benefit from more.

The Sonetto V G2 can be partnered with solid-state or appropriately capable tube amplification. Amplifier quality, current delivery, and control are more important than selecting equipment solely by its advertised maximum wattage.

Two pairs of binding posts allow conventional single-wire connection, bi-wiring, or bi-amplification. Leave the supplied terminal jumpers installed when using a single pair of speaker cables.

Sonetto III G2 or Sonetto V G2?

The Sonetto III G2 is the more compact floorstanding model. Its narrower 2.5-way design is easier to accommodate in a small or medium-sized room and delivers controlled bass without overwhelming limited space.

The Sonetto V G2 adds a dedicated Camelia midrange, sealed cork chamber, two dedicated woofers, and deeper 35Hz bass extension. It produces a larger soundstage, greater dynamic headroom, and more physical low-frequency impact.

Choose the Sonetto III G2 when room compatibility and a visually restrained cabinet are the priorities. Choose the Sonetto V G2 when you want a true three-way architecture, greater scale, and stronger bass performance.

Sonetto V G2 or Sonetto VIII G2?

The Sonetto V G2 offers much of the technology and tonal character of the larger Sonetto VIII G2 in a more manageable enclosure. It is generally the more practical option for medium-sized rooms and listening distances.

The Sonetto VIII G2 uses a larger cabinet and additional woofer area to produce greater output, deeper low-frequency authority, and more effortless performance in a large room.

Choose the Sonetto V G2 when you want full-range performance without the physical scale of the largest model. Choose the Sonetto VIII G2 for a large listening room, longer seating distance, or higher playback levels.

Stereo and Home Theater Applications

The Sonetto V G2 has the bandwidth and dynamic capability to anchor a serious two-channel music system. It is well suited to vinyl playback, high-resolution streaming, CD playback, and other quality sources.
