CHA CHA ME is the sole album from BACCO, the super-session group led by Japanese guitarist Masayoshi Takanaka. Originally released in 1979, the record brings Takanaka’s distinctive guitar playing into a tight, energetic mixture of funky fusion, West Coast rock, jazz-rock, and vocal-driven grooves.
Rather than functioning as a conventional instrumental Takanaka album, CHA CHA ME places Jim Diamond’s passionate lead vocals at the center of the group’s polished arrangements. Takanaka is joined by drummer and co-producer Robert Brill, keyboardist Jun Sato, and bassist Getao Takahashi.
The album moves from the opening groove of “High Ace” through “Tokyo Lady,” the title track, and “Seventeen and Blue.” Side two continues with the urban rock feel of “Getting’ Lost Down on 8th Street,” followed by “Just Another Boy in the Band,” “Kid Kind,” and “Stand by Me.”
Released in celebration of Masayoshi Takanaka’s 50th anniversary as a solo artist, this limited Japanese reissue was created using high-resolution audio sourced from the original master tapes. Alex Wharton remastered the album and cut the lacquer at Abbey Road Studios in London.
Pressed on heavyweight 180-gram clear yellow vinyl, this long-awaited edition is an essential addition to any Masayoshi Takanaka vinyl collection and a distinctive vocal-led entry from his celebrated Kitty Records era.
