Bossa Hula Nova

Lisa Ono - Bossa Hula Nova (Vinyl)

Lisa Ono’s Bossa Hula Nova is a beautifully unique entry in her catalog, originally released on July 11, 2001. The album blends two distinct musical worlds—Brazilian bossa nova and traditional Hawaiian music—creating a warm, laid-back listening experience that feels both tropical and timeless.

Built around the concept of reinterpreting Hawaiian standards through a bossa nova lens, Bossa Hula Nova features classics such as “Blue Hawaii” and “Aloha 'Oe”, alongside lesser-known traditional pieces. Lisa Ono’s soft vocals and gentle guitar work bring a relaxed elegance to the material, transforming these songs into breezy, rhythmically rich arrangements.

The album was inspired in part by Ono’s collaborations with Hawaiian artists, including Teresa Bright, and reflects her broader approach of exploring global musical styles through bossa nova arrangements. This cross-cultural fusion makes the album stand out as one of her most distinctive concept releases.

This Japan import vinyl edition, reissued in 2023, presents the album in its full analog warmth. With its smooth instrumentation and tropical atmosphere, Bossa Hula Nova is an essential addition for fans of bossa nova, lounge, and world music vinyl.
