Emerald Shower is Sumiko Yamagata’s eighth album and her final original release for Nippon Columbia. Originally issued in 1978, this Japanese city-pop cornerstone pairs Yamagata’s crystalline vocals with Yasunori Sorimachi’s sophisticated arrangements and an inviting blend of light-mellow grooves, samba rhythms, and polished pop.
From the relaxed sway of “Horoyoi Eve” and “Ano Hi no Yo ni Hohoende” to the buoyant emotion of “Ameagari no Samba,” the album captures an elegant late-1970s studio sound. The accomplished backing ensemble includes Yasushi Ichihara, Shogo Kindaichi, Yasuhiko Tsumura, Akira Inoue, and additional percussion, horn, vocal, and string players.
