The Hôtel Costes series continues to compile darkly attractive lounge music with an ear toward percussive drum’n’bass. Many of Stéphane Pompougnac’s picks orbit the refined Thievery Corporation aesthetic, serrated breakbeats slipping into intelligible jazz and emphasis-free house. Early highlights include The Method’s “I’ve Got a Cat,” whose taut production and cheerful, minimalist vocal float over a slide-guitar line that practically gurgles salt water. With its adaptable selection and light (often unmixed) touch, Hôtel Costes, Vol. 4 rolls past much of its competition, never too stern, always effortlessly stylish.
