Experience the electrifying energy of Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers with the Olympia Concert recorded in Paris on November 22 and December 17, 1958. This 2 LP set captures the band's groundbreaking performances during their first appearance at the Paris Olympia, where they mesmerized the audience with their dynamic hard bop sound.
Blakey, moved to tears, declared, "I've never played for such an audience." The response was overwhelming, prompting a second concert to be staged due to high demand. The Jazz Messengers, featuring Lee Morgan on trumpet, Benny Golson on tenor saxophone, Bobby Timmons on piano, Jimmy Merritt on bass, and Art Blakey on drums, delivered an unforgettable performance that converted many to the hard bop genre.
This concert is noted for its vibrant atmosphere, where jazz enthusiasts and curious bystanders alike were drawn in by the powerful performances. Highlights include "Moanin’" and "Blues March," which became instant classics. The theme of "Moanin’," composed by Bobby Timmons, was particularly well-received, igniting the audience with its gospel-inspired structure.
