In January 1959, legendary tenor saxophonist Lester Young performed a series of concerts at the renowned Blue Note Club in Paris. Accompanied by an exceptional lineup featuring René Urtreger on piano, Kenny Clarke on drums, Jimmy Gourley on guitar, and Jamil Nasser on bass, Young delivered some of his most memorable performances. On March 4, 1959, Eddie Barclay arranged a recording session at Studio Barclay, capturing what would be Lester Young’s final album. This poignant and moving session stands alongside Coleman Hawkins' ‘Sirius’ and Billie Holiday's last recordings as a testament to Young’s enduring grace and genius.
A few days later, on March 15, 1959, Lester Young passed away in New York, succumbing to a heart attack just hours after arriving. The music world lost ‘Prez’, The President, but his legacy continues through these timeless recordings.
