List every turntable, cartridge, streamer, disc player, television, tuner, tape deck, processor, and future source before choosing the required analog, phono, and digital inputs.

Plan the phono stage around the cartridge

Moving-coil and moving-magnet cartridges differ in gain, loading, capacitance, and adjustment needs. The turntable and cartridge should be evaluated with the preamplifier rather than treated as an afterthought.

What does a stereo preamplifier do?

A stereo preamplifier selects sources, controls volume, prepares low-level signals, and sends the properly controlled signal to a separate power amplifier. Depending on the model, it may also provide phono amplification, digital conversion, tone controls, headphone listening, system triggers, and home theater integration.

How do the C22 Mk V, C2800, and C12000 differ?

The C22 Mk V is a classic all-analog vacuum tube preamplifier. The C2800 adds extensive digital connectivity and broader system-control features while retaining a tube signal path. The two-chassis C12000 is the reference analog design and provides selectable vacuum tube or solid-state output paths.

Do I need a preamplifier with a built-in digital audio module?

That depends on whether you want the preamplifier to directly accept USB, optical, coaxial, MCT, or HDMI ARC sources. A digitally equipped preamplifier can simplify the system, while an analog-focused design may be preferred when a separate DAC or analog-only source chain is already planned.

Can these preamplifiers work with my turntable?
