Digital-source selection guide

Choose by media, connection, control, and system role

Start with the music formats and services you use, then compare network requirements, DAC and variable-output functions, disc support, analog and digital outputs, control platforms, and whether the product also includes amplification.

01

Start with the music and media

List streaming services, locally stored files, CDs, SACDs, television audio, Bluetooth sources, computers, and legacy digital transports that must remain part of the system.

02

Define the product's role

Decide whether the component should only supply a digital signal, perform D/A conversion, control volume as a digital preamplifier, or also provide amplification and loudspeakers.

03

Map every input and output

Confirm USB, coaxial, optical, MCT, HDMI ARC, balanced analog, unbalanced analog, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, trigger, and control requirements before choosing the model.

04

Verify the exact streaming platform

Roon, AirPlay, Google Cast, Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz Connect, Bluetooth, app control, and firmware support vary by product and should be checked model by model.

HDMI ARC and television integration

Bring television audio into a two-channel McIntosh system

HDMI ARC can simplify television sound, input switching, and volume control. Confirm whether the McIntosh product performs conversion only, also controls volume, or includes the amplification needed to drive speakers.

Current HDMI ARC options

Confirm television audio format, volume-control behavior, input switching, and downstream amplification before installation.

Disc playback

Player or transport?

A player contains its own digital-to-analog conversion and analog outputs. A transport sends a digital signal to a compatible external DAC, preamplifier, integrated amplifier, or receiver.

Services, control, and network support

Check support for Roon, AirPlay, Google Cast, Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz Connect, Bluetooth, Ethernet, and Wi-Fi rather than assuming every streamer uses the same platform.

System architecture

Fixed output or variable output?

A source with variable output may connect directly to a power amplifier in a carefully planned system. Fixed output normally feeds a separate preamplifier or integrated amplifier.

Frequently asked questions

Buying a McIntosh digital source

What counts as a McIntosh digital source?

This collection centers on current McIntosh products whose main role is streaming, digital conversion, Bluetooth reception and transmission, or SACD/CD playback. Integrated streaming products may also appear when digital playback is a defining part of the design.

What is the difference between a streamer and a streaming DAC?

A streamer retrieves and controls network-based music. A streaming DAC also converts the signal to analog for connection to a preamplifier, integrated amplifier, or power amplifier. Exact output and volume-control capabilities vary by model.

What is the difference between a disc player and a transport?

A disc player includes an internal DAC and analog outputs. A transport sends digital audio to a compatible external DAC-equipped component and normally has no analog audio output of its own.

Can a McIntosh digital source improve television sound?

Models with audio-only HDMI ARC can route television audio into a two-channel system and may support television-remote volume control. The television output format and the rest of the audio system must still be configured correctly.

Can a DAC connect directly to a power amplifier?

A DAC or streaming DAC with a properly implemented variable output can sometimes connect directly to a power amplifier. Gain structure, volume safety, source switching, analog-source needs, and future expansion should be reviewed before omitting a separate preamplifier.

Do all McIntosh streamers support the same services?

No. Roon, AirPlay, Google Cast, Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz Connect, Bluetooth, app control, wired networking, and Wi-Fi support depend on the individual product and generation.
