McIntosh Laboratory

Built for a lifetime of listening

Iconic design, enduring engineering, and system-level performance come together in a component intended to anchor a serious music or cinema system.

Compact McIntosh disc playback with a high-resolution DAC

The McIntosh MCD85 SACD/CD Player combines premium disc playback, a Quad Balanced digital-to-analog converter, and versatile digital inputs in a distinctive compact chassis. It plays commercial SACDs and CDs as well as compatible files from burned CD and DVD data discs, while its USB, coaxial, and optical inputs let it serve as the digital hub of a serious two-channel audio system.

At just over 12 inches wide, the MCD85 is narrower than a traditional full-size McIntosh component. Its polished open-chassis design pairs naturally with models such as the C8 preamplifier and MC830 amplifier, yet its balanced and unbalanced outputs make it equally suitable for a wide range of McIntosh and other high-end stereo systems.

MCD85 highlights

  • Plays SACD, CD, CD-R/RW, and DVD-R data discs
  • Quad Balanced 8-channel, 32-bit PCM/DSD DAC
  • USB audio input supports PCM up to 24-bit/192kHz, DSD256, and DXD384kHz
  • Two coaxial and two optical digital inputs support PCM up to 24-bit/192kHz
  • Fixed balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA analog stereo outputs
  • 2x disc-reading speed with buffer memory for improved tracking and error correction
  • Twin-beam optical pickup optimized separately for SACD and CD playback
  • Compact 12-5/32-inch-wide polished open chassis
  • McIntosh Power Control, data, and IR connections for system integration
  • Three-year McIntosh limited warranty

More than a McIntosh CD player

The MCD85 can reproduce compatible AAC, AIFF, ALAC, DSD, FLAC, MP3, WAV, and WMA files from CD or DVD data discs. Its rear USB Type B input also connects to a computer or compatible digital source, supporting native DSD and DoP playback up to DSD256 plus DXD384kHz. Two coaxial and two optical inputs allow additional digital components to share the MCD85’s internal converter.

Quad Balanced digital conversion

The 8-channel, 32-bit PCM/DSD DAC is operated in Quad Balanced mode, assigning four converter channels to the left channel and four to the right. This architecture is designed to reduce noise and deliver precise stereo reproduction from both physical discs and connected digital sources.

Accurate disc reading and flexible placement

Discs are read at twice normal speed and their data is placed in buffer memory before playback, improving tracking and error correction. A twin-beam optical pickup uses separate laser wavelengths optimized for SACD and CD media. Because the MCD85 is narrower than standard-width components and includes balanced outputs, it can be positioned close to the listener or integrated into a compact system while using longer balanced cables to reach the preamplifier or integrated amplifier.
