A receiver combines processing and amplification in one chassis. Separates allow the processor and power amplifiers to be selected, upgraded, and serviced independently. The right approach depends on room size, speaker demands, channel count, rack space, and long-term plans.

How many amplifier channels does my theater need?

Start with the complete speaker layout, including surrounds and height channels. Some systems use one multichannel amplifier, while others combine three-, five-, seven-, two-, or four-channel models to prioritize the front stage and fill out the remaining channels.
