McIntosh Laboratory

Built for a lifetime of listening

Iconic design, enduring engineering, and system-level performance come together in a component intended to anchor a serious music or cinema system.

Compact McIntosh power with analog and digital flexibility

The McIntosh MA5300 2-Channel Integrated Amplifier combines a full-featured stereo preamplifier, a direct-coupled solid-state power amplifier and an upgradeable digital audio module in one comparatively compact McIntosh chassis. It delivers 100 watts per channel into 8-ohm speakers or 160 watts per channel into 4-ohm speakers, making it a strong foundation for a premium two-channel system where space and simplicity matter.

Its classic black-glass faceplate, illuminated McIntosh logo and dual-scale blue Watt meters are paired with modern system control, high-resolution digital playback, a moving-magnet phono input, Home Theater PassThru and a dedicated High Drive headphone amplifier.

Direct-coupled solid-state amplification

The MA5300 uses a direct-coupled solid-state output stage rather than McIntosh Autoformers. Output is rated according to speaker impedance: 100 watts per channel into 8 ohms and 160 watts per channel into 4 ohms. McIntosh Power Guard® monitors the output signal to help prevent clipping, while Sentry Monitor™ protects the amplifier from potentially damaging operating conditions.

Monogrammed Heatsinks™ are connected to high-current output transistors, allowing the amplifier to reach its intended operating performance without a vacuum-tube warm-up period.

Twelve analog and digital inputs

The MA5300 provides six analog inputs and six digital inputs for a broad range of source components.

  • 4 unbalanced RCA high-level inputs
  • 1 balanced XLR high-level input
  • 1 moving-magnet phono input with fixed loading
  • 2 coaxial digital inputs
  • 2 optical digital inputs
  • 1 USB audio input
  • 1 proprietary MCT input for compatible McIntosh SACD/CD transports

The built-in phono stage is intended for moving-magnet cartridges. A moving-coil cartridge generally requires a separate compatible phono preamplifier or step-up device.

Upgradeable DA1 Digital Audio Module

The standard MA5300 includes the removable DA1 Digital Audio Module. Its Quad Balanced, 8-channel 32-bit DAC supports coaxial and optical signals up to 24-bit/192kHz, while USB supports PCM up to 32-bit/384kHz, DSD256 and DXD up to 384kHz.

Please note: the MA5300 does not include network streaming, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or HDMI in its standard DA1 configuration. McIntosh offers the DA2 as an optional dealer-installed upgrade, adding newer digital processing capabilities and HDMI ARC. Contact Audio Exchange to discuss module availability and installation.

Flexible system integration

Home Theater PassThru allows the MA5300 and its connected front speakers to integrate with a compatible surround processor while preserving a dedicated two-channel music system. An unbalanced variable output can also feed an external power amplifier or other compatible line-level component.

Bass and treble controls can be adjusted independently or bypassed. Inputs can be renamed and level-matched, and RS232, data ports, IR input and McIntosh Power Control support integration with more advanced systems.

High Drive headphone listening

The front-panel 1/4-inch headphone connection uses McIntosh High Drive amplification and Headphone Crossfeed Director (HXD®). HXD can introduce a controlled amount of acoustic crossfeed to create a more speaker-like presentation when listening through headphones.

Important distinctions

  • Solid-state design: the MA5300 does not use vacuum tubes.
  • Direct-coupled output: it does not use McIntosh Autoformers.
  • Roon Tested: it can work with compatible Roon-connected source devices, but it is not itself a network streamer or Roon Ready endpoint.
  • MM phono only: there is no built-in moving-coil phono input.
  • No dedicated subwoofer output: system design should account for the available variable line output and the subwoofer’s connection options.
