McIntosh Laboratory

Built for a lifetime of listening

Iconic design, enduring engineering, and system-level performance come together in a component intended to anchor a serious music or cinema system.

The McIntosh MAC7200 2-Channel Stereo Receiver combines a high-current 200-watt-per-channel solid-state amplifier, a versatile analog preamplifier, McIntosh’s DA2 Digital Audio Module and a high-performance AM/FM tuner in one substantial component. Designed as the centerpiece of a serious two-channel system, it supports loudspeakers, turntables, digital sources, televisions, headphones and traditional radio without requiring a separate tuner or digital-to-analog converter.

200 Watts Per Channel Into 2, 4 or 8 Ohms

The MAC7200 delivers 200 watts per channel into 2-, 4- or 8-ohm loudspeakers. McIntosh Autoformers™ help provide the full rated output across these common speaker impedances, giving the receiver broad compatibility with demanding floorstanding and stand-mount speakers.

Rated total harmonic distortion is 0.005% from 20Hz to 20kHz, while 2dB of dynamic headroom provides additional reserve for musical peaks and low-frequency transients.

Built-In AM/FM Tuner With RDS

Unlike most modern high-end amplifiers, the McIntosh MAC7200 includes a dedicated AM/FM tuner. Separate preset and tuning controls provide direct access to radio functions, while an advanced signal-quality monitor can display multipath and noise information to assist with antenna placement.

The FM section supports Radio Data System information when transmitted by the station, including station identification and program details. The receiver stores up to 20 presets for each radio band and includes the appropriate connection for the supplied remote AM antenna.

15 Analog and Digital Inputs

The MAC7200 provides eight analog inputs:

  • One balanced stereo input
  • Five unbalanced stereo inputs
  • One moving-magnet phono input
  • One moving-coil phono input with adjustable loading

The separate MM and MC phono stages allow many turntables and cartridges to connect directly without an external phono preamplifier.

DA2 Digital Audio Module

The current MAC7200 configuration includes McIntosh’s modular DA2 Digital Audio Module with seven digital audio inputs:

  • Two coaxial digital inputs
  • Two optical digital inputs
  • One USB audio input
  • One proprietary MCT input
  • One audio-only HDMI ARC input

The DA2 uses an 8-channel, 32-bit DAC in Quad Balanced operation. Coaxial and optical sources are supported up to 24-bit/192kHz. USB supports PCM up to 32-bit/384kHz, DSD64 through DSD512 and DXD 352.8/384kHz. The MCT connection supports compatible McIntosh SACD/CD transports.

The HDMI ARC connection allows a compatible television to send audio to the MAC7200 and can support television power and volume control through HDMI-CEC. It is an audio-only ARC connection; it does not pass video and is not a conventional HDMI input for game consoles, disc players or streaming boxes.

System Expansion and Home Theater Integration

Two variable unbalanced outputs provide flexibility for connecting an additional power amplifier or expanding the system. Home Theater PassThru allows a selected input to operate at a fixed volume level when the MAC7200 is incorporated into a surround system controlled by an AV processor or receiver.

Tone Controls, Headphones and Protection

  • Bass and treble tone controls provide simple analog tonal adjustment and can be bypassed when not required.
  • Power Guard® monitors the input and output signals to reduce clipping and potentially damaging distortion.
  • Sentry Monitor™ provides fuse-less short-circuit protection and automatically resets when normal operating conditions return.
  • Monogrammed Heatsinks™ help dissipate heat from the high-current output stage.
  • High Drive headphone amplification with HXD® provides a dedicated 1/4-inch headphone output with Headphone Crossfeed Director.
  • Power Control, data ports, IR and RS232 support integration with compatible McIntosh components and control systems.

Roon Tested, Not a Built-In Streamer

The MAC7200 is designated Roon Tested, meaning Roon has tested its USB compatibility with supported computers and operating systems. It is not Roon Ready and does not contain an internal network streamer, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, AirPlay or Spotify Connect. Network-based playback requires a separate computer, music streamer or other source.

Speaker and System Matching

The MAC7200 is particularly well suited to listeners who want a single high-performance component for speakers, vinyl, digital audio, television sound and terrestrial radio. Speaker sensitivity, impedance behavior, room size, listening distance, source requirements, cartridge compatibility and antenna placement should still be considered when planning the complete system.
