McIntosh MC2.1KW 2,000-Watt Monoblock Power Amplifier
The McIntosh MC2.1KW is a reference-level, one-channel solid state amplifier created for the most demanding two-channel music systems and home theaters. Its three-chassis design combines one Output Module with two 1,000-watt Power Modules to deliver 2,000 watts into 2, 4 or 8 ohms.
The MC2.1KW is sold individually as one complete three-module amplifier system. Two complete MC2.1KW systems are required for conventional stereo operation. It is intended for power-hungry loudspeakers, exceptionally large rooms and reference systems where extreme dynamic headroom and control are required.
Three-Chassis Quad Balanced Design
The incoming signal enters the Output Module and is divided into in-phase and out-of-phase signals. Each signal is amplified by a separate 1,000-watt Power Module before returning to the Output Module, where the McIntosh Autoformer™ combines their power while reducing common noise and distortion.
Separating the amplifier into three modules makes each chassis more manageable than a single enclosure weighing more than 400 pounds. It also allows the Power Modules to use conventional household-voltage connections rather than requiring one specialized high-voltage connection.
Why Choose the McIntosh MC2.1KW?
- 2,000 watts into 2, 4 or 8 ohms: The hand-wound McIntosh Autoformer delivers full rated power across all three supported loudspeaker impedances.
- Quad Balanced architecture: The two Power Modules operate in a balanced configuration that helps cancel noise and distortion.
- Eight large filter capacitors: The substantially enlarged capacitor banks support improved low-frequency performance and greater dynamic headroom.
- Dual balanced and unbalanced inputs: Two input sets allow connection to two preamplifiers or to separate tube and solid state outputs from a compatible preamplifier.
- Multiple speaker terminals: Three sets of Solid Cinch™ binding posts are provided for each 2, 4 and 8-ohm output to simplify bi-wiring or tri-wiring.
- Power Guard®: Monitors the signal and makes rapid adjustments to help prevent clipping and potential loudspeaker damage.
- Sentry Monitor™: Fuse-free short-circuit protection disengages the output stage when operating limits are exceeded and automatically resets afterward.
- Monogrammed Heatsinks™: Four heatsinks on each Power Module maintain stable thermal performance under demanding conditions.
- Direct LED illumination: Illuminates the blue Watt meter, logos and visible capacitor banks with consistent lighting.
Built for Reference Music and Theater Systems
The MC2.1KW is suited to large, difficult-to-drive loudspeakers and systems that must reproduce wide dynamic swings without strain. It can be used as part of a two-channel reference system, as a dedicated amplifier for a critical home-theater channel or in multi-amplifier installations.
Compared with the McIntosh MC1.25KW, the MC2.1KW increases rated output from 1,200 watts to 2,000 watts and moves from a single chassis to a three-module architecture. The MC1.25KW is considerably easier to place, while the MC2.1KW is intended for systems that require McIntosh’s highest level of power delivery and physical scale.
Installation and Placement
One MC2.1KW includes an Output Module weighing 125 pounds and two Power Modules weighing 145 pounds each, for a combined net weight of approximately 415 pounds. Each module is nearly 18 inches wide and more than 30 inches deep when its handles and interconnect cables are included.
The three modules require properly rated equipment platforms, generous ventilation and careful delivery planning. Electrical service, outlet placement, cable routing, floor loading and access through doors or stairways should be evaluated before installation. A stereo system requires six total chassis.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the McIntosh MC2.1KW sold as a pair?
No. One MC2.1KW is a complete monoblock amplifier consisting of three chassis and powers one audio channel. Two complete systems are needed for stereo.
Does one MC2.1KW include all three modules?
Yes. One amplifier includes one Output Module and two 1,000-watt Power Modules, along with the required module interconnects.
Can the MC2.1KW deliver full power into 2-ohm speakers?
Yes. Its dedicated 2, 4 and 8-ohm Autoformer outputs deliver the full rated 2,000 watts into each supported impedance.
Why does the MC2.1KW use three chassis?
The arrangement divides the amplifier’s weight into more manageable modules and allows the two Power Modules to connect to conventional household-voltage outlets instead of requiring one specialized high-voltage connection.
Can two preamplifiers be connected?
Yes. The dual balanced and unbalanced input sets permit connection to two preamplifiers or to separate vacuum-tube and solid-state outputs from a compatible preamplifier.
How does the MC2.1KW compare with the MC1.25KW?
The MC2.1KW delivers 2,000 watts and uses three chassis, while the MC1.25KW delivers 1,200 watts from one chassis. The MC2.1KW is designed for the most demanding reference systems and requires substantially more installation space and structural support.
